TheBreakdownProject Update

So not even a week in and I’m already having to put a small hiatus on ‘TheBreakdownProject’.

I started this project to give myself work whilst looking for more internships/jobs/freelance work but after just a few days I’ve been given a great brief at my current internship which will involve my old digital design skills being dusted off and as much as I cant wait to get my teeth into the first edit of TheBreakdown, it will have to be put of until the weekend, but with that coming out and a band’s studio session being recorded on the coming monday, the ball should finally get rolling on this thing.

If you’re reading this and have yet to subscribe in advance of the videos going up, please click this link ->  TheBreakdownProject  <- and subscribe. Thanks.

Time for an update

So, it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything on tumblr but it’s time for an update and I cant see me fitting all of this into 140 characters so tumblr looks to be the best platform.

For the past month I’ve been working at an unpaid internship and now with just 2 weeks left I am close to being stuck, unemployed and with nothing to work on. So with this thought constantly playing on my mind I have begun working on something new.

For my final project at university I created a project interviewing creative companies called ‘The Breakdown Project’ and though the final product was nowhere near meeting the expectations I had, I did get quite a lot of good feedback for.

I am re-launching TheBreakdownProject, but as this is now something more free and open to do in my spare time, instead of a stressful project of hell with a deadline, I am upping my game a little.

The new Breakdown Project will feature a few more series as well as the original company interview series, all these still fitting under the concept of ‘The Breakdown’. This concept being that each video breaks down the information given by who or what that particular video is about.

So the series are as such.

  • The Breakdown: Creators.

Interviews with creative companies and individuals

  • The Breakdown: Acoustic

Acoustic one song performances by musicians with short interview

  • The Breakdown: Cinema

I have been working with a small team of creatives to try and get some short film ideas of mine off the ground. Some range from 2-5 mins long but one at the moment is well into a full short feature and though won’t be around for months, will still be created under this channel.

  • The Breakdown: Vlogs

Not daily, as my day to day life isnt nearly exciting enough to talk about, but each project I work on, be it through TheBreakdown, freelance or at an Internship I will talk about the thoughts of that day, some footage, the process and whatever else comes to mind.

This information has all been put into the first introductory vlog which will be going up tomorrow but if anyone is interested in the project do let me know. Going to try to be a lot more active on here from now on due to this project depending heavily on online community so keep checking back and if you do have a youtube account, please, subscribe. So, as my internship doesn’t start until Wednesday now instead of today. I may as well get back to a small project I’m currently working on with a number of people. Just a glimpse here at some rough concept visuals for that. Much more to come soon.

This mindset is why I hope to never retire. Just change goals over time.

MoonriseKingdom ›

This is much better.

Compared to the posters which I recently wrote about, the official website which recently opened for Moonrise Kindgom features a map of the island of New Penzance, The Island which the film is set.

The story is based around two young lovers who run away and then the whole town boasting an array of different odd characters join the hunt to track them down.

As well as looking really nice catching the Anderson look and feel, the site works so well because it hints at some of the places which could or could not feature within the story such as Roman’s ruins and Fidelity Island. The main focus of the site though is to provide the viewer with content about the film such as character bios and scene videos.

Overall I think it’s a much more exciting piece of promotion compared to the posters and as most of the links are ‘coming soon’ it is a piece that I will be going back to and regularly checking for updates both before and after the films release.

This is the second episode for The Breakdown which features OWT Creative. It took a while to work out the right export from premiere as using my usual after effects settings was nocking it from 1280x720 to 720x500(or something similair) which is not of equal ratio to the widescreen version I started with, therefore adding a thick black border to the top and bottom but after some delving into some more formats I noticed one aimed specifically for youtube HD though this did drop frame rate down to 24fps.

For the second episode I wanted to try something a bit different, though I liked the first, I wasnt 100% satisfied with the way in which the questions where asked, with the title cards, so I decided on eliminating them all together.

Though the project in hindsight had it’s faults, the main one became my interview skills. Asking a question is fine but I could never ask questions on camera in a relaxed, fluent way so for OWT I mentioned this beforehand and discussed the option of typical interview formats. such as the interviewee answering my question by first repeating the question followed by the answer, then cutting off my part in editing.

This new format worked much nicer and allowed the episode to flow more but in my opinion I think that it separates the feature from the opening and closer parts that feature myself. The first episode had continuity in that the Breakdown musical motif repeated itself throughout the video whereas the lack of that in this episode made the opening and closer more like bookends to something which could of been a single video on it’s own.

Another fault I picked up on afterwards is that some answers, specifically the first, may drag a bit, which I could of edited down a little bit but I didnt want to lose any valuable insight to OWT.

I think in the when i carry this project on over summer I will still keep the opening and closer as this was originally the thing that would differ my series to others out there that are similar. I believe that to get a community based around something people need someone to communicate to. yes the videos could still get comments and the social sites would still be active, but featuring myself addressing the viewer personally adds a touch that I rarely see with these types of video.

I dont know whether it is a good or bad thing that the only thing that remains of the previously mentioned project is this mashed up early zoatrope attempt that I have just unwedged from underneath the wonky corner of my wardrobe.

phonotropia.blogspot.co.uk ›

As an addition to my last post, this site was my haven whilst wanting to create a phonotrope.I sat and refreshed everyday, waiting to see something which could spark something new into my own idea.

The site was set up by Jim le Fevre, who was the animator who created the Monty Python phonotrope. I had difficulty tracking down phonotropes online until I found this mans blog and even afterwards found that the reason is because there is very few phonotropes anyway.

As good as this site was for inspiration, it also contained the videos that turned me off the whole project entirely. As I scrolled through the videos I found tests and explanations (which have since been deleted) of how he had created a basic structure to follow. And as good as I feel I am at following instructions, I just couldnt do it.

This isnt to say I didnt try. I more than tried. For a straight month I came home from uni/work and got back to my desk with ridiculous amounts of cut out paper animations and paper discs piled up high, trying to get everything timed perfectly. But I just couldnt get it down.

The smart thing to do would of been to get help, speak to some of the guys in the workshop at uni and see if they could of helped with a better construction, got someone who was better at maths to of helped me work it all out. But again like I said in my previous post, in hindsight…IDIOT!

Phonotropes

Before I settled on The Breakdown, my original idea was to create a phonotrope. This video gave me hope…then took it all away.

I’ve always enjoyed the physical construction of a project. Within any creative outlet this has always been my favourite part and at the time the idea was that I enjoy the setting up of a shot and the filming side to a production than the editing side, so I decided this was what I wanted to do for my project. Something which I could spend a vast majority of my time getting the idea and construction perfect and to have the Phonotrope itself be what drives the plot, instead of my editing.

IDIOT. It’s the only word I could use to sum up my response to what I thought, literally 4/5 months a go. I could use naive or ambitious, but Idiot sums it up perfectly.

The way I saw it was that I could use their making of video as a tutorial. They include a big insight on how a phonotrope is made, though they dont discuss it, it’s in there. So, I thought I could take that, scale it down a bit, drop a few layers and make things much simpler for myself. I was wrong. after starting my research I realised just how technical a phonotrope can be to make. yes, getting one layer down is ok if not time consuming but when you start to add extra layers such as in this Monty Python video, things get much, much harder.

Maths has never been a strongest point of mine but I thought I could be up to the challenge, but mixing what little I knew of stop motion timing and a very temperamental speed dial of a very old record player, created the biggest obstacle I’ve ever attempted to get over, and I failed, so much so that I decided to switch my whole Idea. Luckily this was still in February.

Moonrise Kingdom posters (Click this link) ›

As always I look forward to anything released by Wes Anderson, and with his new film coming out this summer and after my dissertation on film marketing, things like poster releases have become just as important to me as the trailers.

The online posters for Moonrise Kingdom tick all the boxes when it comes down to the “Wes Anderson look”. His use of pastel colours, tinted stills and elegant fonts yet I cant help but be disappointed.

To try something new the posters are clickable. Each image that runs along the top and bottom of the posters can be clicked, and when done so then becomes the centre image which a quote from Im guessing either that scene or that particular character.

Though the idea is nice, I feel like he could of done something much more groundbreaking. I understand his films aren’t summer blockbusters or even aim to hit that market so he doesn’t have to go to the guerrilla extremes some films go, but for someone I have so much respect for as an artist it becomes irritating to see them, in my opinion, cop out.
